Medical Check
The aim of the medical check-up is to determine your general state of health and draw up a personal profile for health risks. It serves to identify possible abnormalities such as hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, vessel constriction or changes in the abdominal organs at an early stage. Preventive urological and gynaecological screenings and an ultrasound examination of the thyroid complete the Segeberger Kliniken medical check-up.
Examination of the cardiovascular system
A doctor in the Cardiovascular Centre’s cardiology department, headed by chief physician Prof. Dr. Gert Richardt, carries out a physical examination and interview recording your medical history. Further preventive medical diagnostics include comprehensive laboratory diagnostics, an electrocardiogram (ECG), an ultrasound examination of the heart and carotid artery, a spiroergometry with lactate measurement, occlusion pressure measurement of the leg arteries and a pulmonary function test. This is followed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart and MR angiography of the cerebral arteries.
These non-invasive procedures usually do not involve contrast agents (e.g. barium meals), are pain-free, do not entail any potentially damaging X-rays and are generally well-tolerated. Our state-of-the-art magnetic resonance tomograph offers extraordinary comfort thanks to an open design with a particularly large diameter.
Diagnostic ultrasound
The Clinic for Internal Medicine, under the leadership of chief physician Dr. Diether Ludwig, performs a detailed ultrasound of the abdominal organs and thyroid. By using advanced diagnostic equipment, diseases such as tumours, cysts, organ enlargement/reduction or stones can be shown painlessly and without the need for radiation.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is the most important examination for the early detection of colon cancer. Even small tumours and intestinal polyps can be detected using this method – as well as other bowel diseases such as chronic inflammation, changes in the intestinal wall, abnormalities of the blood vessels of the bowel, or acute inflammation and circulatory disorders of the intestinal wall.
To prepare for the examination, a remedy is taken on the afternoon before the appointment to clean the bowel. During the procedure itself, you will be given a light sedative to minimise the discomfort of the colonoscopy.
Preventive screening for men and women
For men, the medical check-up includes a urological preventive/diagnostic examination (partly using ultrasound) of the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and external genitals, as well as symptoms of male ageing and erectile dysfunction. Special questionnaires will help you to phrase these issues to discuss with the doctor.
For women, the medical check-up consists of a gynaecological preventive/diagnostic exam covering the full spectrum of female screening. These include pap smears and ultrasound of the genitals, palpation of the breasts and from a certain age, additional diagnostic ultrasound.
Comprehensible advice and time for questions
We take plenty of time to discuss the results of all examinations with you, then show you ways to enhance your long-term health in everyday life and, depending on the diagnosis, point up other therapeutic measures. And when you are back at home, you can, of course, always phone to make an appointment with the doctor who conducted your medical check-up, if any further questions arise for you.
